OSA WINDSURFING COMMITTEE REPORT
By: Jon Matthews, OSA Windsurfing Chair
To start the new
millennium Ontario windsurfing took a slightly new direction - toward
youth. Ontario has had arguably the
strongest "masters" windsurfing in North America, a group which has
for years dominated our provincial racing. In 2000 however, this group put more
effort into helping train youth. The renewed youth focus is beginning to pay
off as this year “Junior” (16 and under) sailors excelled at some events and even took the Overall championship.
The boys then went on to dominate both Canadian and American national youth
championship events. We congratulate
our Junior boys on their 2000 successes, and invite more girls to join the team
in 2001.
In training our youth
windsurfers, we have emphasized racing the Olympic Mistral One-Design board,
which is available 'used' following a decade of production and which is almost
as durable as a Laser. The ideal sailor
weight for the Mistral’s full sail is 120-170 lbs, which is a good range for
youth, but a smaller 6.6m sail is available for lighter sailors. A 5.9m sail
has also just been accepted for the new 'Junior' class for younger and smaller
sailors. We are now training youth in
Toronto at the Toronto Windsurfing Club, and hope to have similar centers
operating in Ottawa and Kingston in 2001.
This year's windsurfing regatta series
visited Toronto (TWC) in May, Wasaga (Rogue Wave) in June, and Ottawa
(Britannia Yacht Club) in August. In total, 58
people (including 12 youth sailors) participated in 2000, an increase
of about 60% over last year. Windsurfing is alive and well in
Ontario!
The first OSA
Windsurfing Regatta of 2000 was hosted in May by the Toronto Windsurfing Club,
and was also counted as the "TWC High School Championship". At this
event, the Youth sailors began to show their presence, with 3 of the top 4
racers being under 17. Although the fleet of 35 (10 youth) was disappointed by
light wind on Saturday, we were able to get in two races with Diego Villalobos
from Lakefield taking two firsts. The wind improved on Sunday and Mike Hayes of
the TWC grabbed four straight firsts.
Although the High School Championship was won by Upper Canada College,
Lawrence Park was very close, and Lakefield College School has shown that it is
redeveloping its traditional strength.
The second Regatta,
hosted by Lee and Carla Briton of Rogue Wave Windsurfing in Wasaga Beach, and
co-sponsored by Fathom Windsurfing and in cooperation with the Town of Wasaga
Beach, was our smallest but most social regatta and might be subtitled
"Life is a Beach". Junior
sailor Ian Matthews took firsts (and overall 1st place) in 4 out of
6 races in good wind and mixed weather including sun, rain, and heavy fog.
Dincer Kocalar came a strong second, and Rick Collins placed 3rd
& first overall master.
Our August regatta, hosted by the Britannia Yacht Club in Ottawa, was run jointly with the Masters Championship and was our largest and most memorable event, with 39 boards on the start line; the BYC are marvelous hosts! We had clear skies and light winds and Derek Wulff (past NA champ and king of light air) came out of retirement to take five straight firsts on an old 1980s Mistral 'superlight'. Yvon Lefebvre took second place and second Master. The top juniors were Ian Matthews (in third) followed by Mike Hayes (in fourth).
The season ended with CORK, which hosted this year’s NA Mistral Championships, with almost half the fleet ‘under 19’ – our best youth showing in my memory.
The Ontario Series (which does not include CORK) was won by a Junior (Ian Matthews, age 16) for the first time in many years, and we expect strong youth performances for the next few years. Congratulations also go out to Dincer Kocalar (2nd Overall / 1st Male), Rick Collins (3rd Overall / 1st Master), and Andree Gauthier (8th Overall / 1st Female).

Overall winner of the 2000 OSA Windsurfing Series: Ian Matthews
Many thanks to all those who helped in organizing these events and special thanks to the people (especially the ‘McNeill family team’) that committed their time and expertise to provide these events with such high quality Race Committees.
We hope to see all of you on the Ontario Windsurfing Circuit again in 2001.
