Sailing Instructions


1. RULES
 
1.1 The regatta will be governed by the 'rules' as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing.
 
1.2 Appendix B (sailboard) will apply.
 
2. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS
Notices to competitors will be posted on an 'official notice board' located near the registration area.
 
3.  CHANGES TO THE SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
Changes to the sailing instructions may be posted before 1000 on the day it will take effect or given orally onsite before the race.
 
4.  SIGNALS MADE ASHORE
4.1 Signals made ashore will be displayed near the registration/launching area.

4.2  Although the AP (postponed) flag displayed on the race committee boat signifies a delay of "1 minute or more", nevertheless when the  flag is displayed ashore then the flag signifies a delay of "not less than 20 minutes".
 
4.3  Special Signals
4.3.1  Race signal AP over race signal L (lunch) signaled from the race committee signal boat means that “Lunch break has begun”. The end of lunch break will be signaled afloat or ashore. Ashore, the warning signal will be made not less than 20 minutes after the lowering of race signal AP over race signal L. Afloat, the warning signal for the next race will be made one minute after race signal AP over race signal L is lowered.
 
5  SCHEDULE OF RACES
5.1 Saturday :

0900-1000 Registration
1000 Competitor’s Information Session
1030 Warning Signal for first race (for probable 1100 first race)    

     Sunday:

0930 Warning Signal for first race (for probable 1000 first race)

 

5.2  No start sequence will be initiated after

1730 the first day (Saturday) nor after

1530 the second day (Sunday – unless a 3 day event continuing Monday , and then 1700).

 


6  THE COURSE
 
6.1 The diagrams (in Attachment 1) show the courses, including the approximate angles between legs, the order in which marks are to be passed, and the side on which each mark is to be left.
 
6.2 The race committee signal boat will signal the course to be sailed by displaying a flag with the course’s letter designation

      (in absence of course letter, the "I course" is the default).
 
7 MARKS
7.1 The course marks will be as described (color & shape) at the Competitor’s Information Session.
 
7.2 The start marks will be the race committee signal boat at the starboard end and a mark of the course at the port end.

      The finish marks will be the race committee signal boat at the upwind end and a mark of the course at the downwind end.

 
8 THE START
8.1 Races will be started using rule 26 with the warning signal given five minutes before the starting signal.

Simple Paraphrase of Rule 26 = STARTING RACES 

(Races shall be started by using visual signals; sound signal is only an aid)
5 minutes before start (called Warning)    = Class flag up + 1 sound    (usually yellow up)
4 minutes before start (called Prepatory) = Prep flag up  + 1 sound     (usually blue up)
1 minutes before start (called "1 minute) = Prep flag down + 1 sound (blue down)
0 minutes before start (called "Start"      = Class flag down + 1 sound (yellow down)

 

8.2 The starting line will be between the flag staff on the race committee signal boat on the starboard end and the port end starting mark.
 
8.3 A competitor starting later than five minutes after their starting signal will be scored "Did Not Start" (DNS). This changes rule A4.1.
 
9 THE FINISH
9.1 The finishing line will be between the flag staff on the race committee signal boat and the mark near the stern of the race committee signal boat.
 
10 MINIMUM WIND SPEEDS and TIME LIMITS
10.1 The race committee will not attempt to start a race if they judge the wind to be less than five knots over the course area.
 
10.2  If a race is started and the wind speed drops below 5 knots for more than 20 minutes, the race committee may either shorten or abandon that race.
 
10.3  The time limit is one hour for all fleets, from the start of their fleet.
 
10.4  Competitors failing to finish within 20 minutes after the first windsurfer sails the course and finishes will be scored "Did Not Finish" (DNF). This changes rules 35 and A4.1.
 
10.5 High Wind Events
10.5.1 The wind minimum for a high wind event is 20 knots. The course chosen will depend on the on the wind speed and direction. The course starting time and procedure will be posted on the Official Notice Board 30 minutes prior to the warning signal. Oral instructions may be made ashore by the race committee.
 
11 PROTESTS
11.1 Protest forms are available from the registration desk. Protests shall be delivered there within one hour after the last finisher of the last race of the day.
 
11.2 Protests will be heard in the approximate order of receipt beginning as soon as possible.
 
11.3 The location and approximate time of the first hearing will be posted on the Official Notice Board within 30 minutes of the protest time limit.
 
11.4 A competitor may not protest another competitor for allegedly failing to meet the membership requirements of ISAF regulation 21.1(b){foreign competitors}.

This changes rule 66.
 
15 SCORING
15.1 The Low-Point scoring system of RRS Appendix A will apply.

15.2 One race shall be completed to constitute a series
 
15.3 When five or more races have been completed; a competitor’s series score will be the total of their race scores excluding their worst score.
 
15.4 The results of each category will be determined by the ranking within the overall fleet result.
 
15.5 High Wind results will be scored separately from the Course Racing results.

 

15.6 Any competitor completing a shortened course shall be scored as finishing after any competitor who completes the full course.
 
16 SAFETY REGULATIONS

16.1  Each competitor is required to wear a life jacket or other adequate personal buoyancy at all times while on the water. This changes rule 40 and the part 4 preamble.
 
16.2  Before launching, a competitor must advise the Beach Master of their intent to participate in the next series of races.
 
16.3  On the water each competitor must check in with the race committee signal boat and ensure that they have been acknowledged.
 
16.4  A competitor that retires from a race shall notify a race committee vessel as soon as possible.
 
17 EQUIPMENT AND MEASUREMENT CHECKS
17.1 All sails must have a sail number as per Windsurfing Canada/CYA specifications. Windsurfing Canada numbers will take precedence. One other family member may use the same sail number but with the addition of a 1-meter long black streamer attached to the masthead.
 
17.2 Weight jackets are not permitted.
 
17.3 Only one raceboard hull may be used per regatta, that is any ISAF Division 1 production hull, with its standard production centerboard. Minimum hull length is 3.2m. Maximum sail size in 7.5m˛ with the exception of the Extra Heavy Men, which may use an 8.5m˛ sail.
 
18 PRIZES
18.1  Prizes shall be awarded if there are three or more entries in a category.  First, second and third places will be awarded if there are ten or more entries in a category. First and second places will be awarded if there are only five entries.

With less than five entries, only first place will be awarded.  If there are insufficient entries in a category, competitors will be scored in a an appropriate category.

The “I” course :
Signaled by display of the letter “I” from the committee boat.
Marks will be rounded in the order : Start-1-2-1-2-Finish.
 


The “Trapazoidcourse :
Signaled by display of the letter “L” from the committee boat.
Marks will be rounded in the order : Start-1-2-3-2-3-4-Finish.
