TWC and West Nile
I will summarize where the Clubs appear to be at with respect to West Nile prevention:
1) Breeding water (Standing water for 4 days) is being controlled by member education and a routine of one person assigned to this task inspecting the grounds daily . Clubs are turning boats over, fixing tarps so that water does not pool, removing rubber tires ( which are impossible to keep dry) and removing other objects that can pool water. Inaccessible water sites such as under the club house are being treated with Larvicide (available at Rona-Lansing). Keep the brush cut.
2) Education is a high priority and difficult to impress unless a member has been exposed to a person who was sick with West Nile. You can die from this or you can be left with permanent neurological injury. Or, in the milder version you can be very sick with fever headache and severe aches and pains for a week! We have had two members at our club 1 last year and 1 this year - fortunately with no neurological problems - just very sick!
3) The clubs are educating by Newsletter, Email and Posted notices.

The message is:
a) Mosquitoe bites canbe lethal !
b) When the mosquitoes are out, use Deet and cover up with light coloured clothing. Some clubs are providing Deet for members to use.
c) Do not allow standing water.

Cheers, R. M.- HBC
